Aperture releases limited-edition print and book set of Justine Kurland's Girl Pictures series
Aperture has launched a limited-edition bundle featuring a signed copy of Justine Kurland's 2020 monograph Girl Pictures and a signed, numbered print from the series, limited to 100 editions. Proceeds support both the artist and Aperture's publishing and programming initiatives. Kurland's Girl Pictures series, created between 1997 and 2002, depicts teenage girls in the American wilderness, challenging the masculine myths of the frontier. The artist describes staging the girls as a 'standing army of teenaged runaways in resistance to patriarchal ideals,' portraying them as fearless, tender, and engaged in activities like hunting and swimming. The series gained early attention through the 1999 group show Another Girl, Another Planet at Van Doren Waxter Gallery in New York. Kurland, born in 1969 in Warsaw, New York, holds a BFA from the School of Visual Arts (1996) and an MFA from Yale University (1998). Her work is in collections including the Whitney Museum of American Art, Guggenheim Museum, and International Center of Photography, all in New York. The prints, with an image size of 7 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches, ship from New York within 3–5 days. This release follows Kurland's earlier monograph Highway Kind, published by Aperture in 2016.
