Aperture Publishes First Survey of Late Cree Artist Kimowan Metchewais

On January 10, 2023, Aperture published "A Kind of Prayer," a 268-page monograph dedicated to Kimowan Metchewais, a Cree artist who passed away in 2011 at the age of forty-seven. The book showcases 150 photographs from his Polaroid collection alongside mixed-media pieces that explore themes of Indigenous identity and colonial history. Metchewais, born in 1963 in Oxbow, Saskatchewan, was an accomplished illustrator who obtained a BFA from the University of Alberta and an MFA from the University of New Mexico. He was awarded the Ellen Battell Stoeckel Fellowship in 1995 and a national honor from the Canadian Native Arts Foundation in 1996. At the time of his death, he served as an associate professor at UNC Chapel Hill. Writers Christopher Green, Emily Moazami, and Jeff Whetstone contributed to the work.
