Aperture Publishes 'As We Rise: Photography from the Black Atlantic' Featuring Wedge Collection
Aperture released the hardcover publication 'As We Rise: Photography from the Black Atlantic' on November 30, 2021. The 184-page volume contains 142 images exploring African diasporic culture through photography. Dr. Kenneth Montague, founder of the Wedge Collection in 1997 and Wedge Curatorial Projects, contributed to this compilation focused on Black identity. Montague serves on the Art Gallery of Ontario's board of trustees and Tate Modern's African acquisitions committee. Photographer and writer Teju Cole, whose work includes the photobook 'Blind Spot' (2017) and novel 'Open City' (2011), is featured. Cole previously served as photography critic for the New York Times Magazine and teaches at Harvard University. Dr. Mark Sealy, director of Autograph ABP since 1991, brings expertise on photography's relationship to social change and racial politics. Sealy curated 'From Here to Eternity: Sunil Gupta. A Retrospective' and authored 'Decolonising the Camera: Photography in Racial Time' (2019). Liz Ikiriko, a Nigerian Canadian artist and curator based in Toronto, cocurated the 13th Rencontres de Bamako/African Biennale of Photography in Mali (2022). Ikiriko serves as curator of collections at the Art Gallery of York University and has organized exhibitions at Gallery 44 and ArtSpace Peterborough. The book measures 9.6 x 11.4 x 0.8 inches with ISBN 9781597115100.
