Aperture 246 Explores Celebration in Photography

The Spring 2022 issue of Aperture magazine, titled 'Celebrations,' examines how photographs capture ceremonies, festivities, and everyday euphoria. Featuring contributions from Lynne Tillman, who surveys landmark celebration images by artists including Malick Sidibé, Peter Hujar, and LaToya Ruby Frazier, the issue also includes profiles and essays: Alistair O’Neill on Jamie Hawkesworth, Moeko Fujii on Rinko Kawauchi, Tiana Reid on Shikeith, Mona Eltahawy on Myriam Boulos, and Anakwa Dwamena on Marilyn Nance’s documentation of FESTAC '77 in Lagos. Photographers portray exuberance amid political strife in Beirut, wanderlust, family histories, and the urge to gather, from Kinshasa’s 1950s–60s nightlife to London’s contemporary dance floors.
