Aosta Exhibition Rediscoveries Rosalie D'Hérin Seris, Pioneering Female Photographer

The Autonomous Region of Valle d'Aosta opens a monographic exhibition at the Church of San Lorenzo in Aosta dedicated to Rosalie D'Hérin Seris (1871-1956), recognized as the first professional female photographer of the Aosta Valley. Curated by Daria Jorioz, the show runs from July 25, 2026 to February 28, 2027. It presents 29 images selected from approximately 700 original glass plate negatives preserved in the Seris Fund of the Bureau Régional Ethnologie et Linguistique. Prints were made by Enrico Peyrot. Born in a small village of Montjovet in 1871, Seris trained in Turin after meeting a traveling photographer from Piedmont, then returned to open a portrait studio. Her clients included valley residents and visitors to the Saint-Vincent thermal spa. Her style features natural light, low angles, and spontaneous poses, showing an authorial sensibility ahead of its time. The exhibition is part of the valorization of the BREL archives and marks the first comprehensive survey of her work.
