Any Young Mechanic: Adelaide Alt-Folk Band on BIGSOUND, Cinema, and Their Debut Album

Adelaide/Tarntanya-based alt-folk five-piece Any Young Mechanic, comprising Luka Kilgariff-Johnson, Thea Martin, Allan McBean, Jay Eliot Mee, and Sam Wilson, have released their debut album 'The Modern Shoe Is Ruining The Foot' and are set to perform at BIGSOUND in September. The band, formerly known as Wake In Fright, changed their name due to legal issues with the film rights holders. In an interview with frankie, the members discussed their formation, the influence of cinema on their songwriting, the meaning behind their album title, and the vibrant Adelaide music scene. Sam Wilson cited Sufjan Stevens and Angelo De Augustine's 'A Beginner's Mind' as an inspiration for connecting film and music. The band collaborates with SA film collective Moviejuice, having performed at their Summer Film Festival and co-hosted a screening of their music videos and Robert Altman's 'Brewster McCloud'. Thea Martin attributed Adelaide's creative output to the city's distance from major commercial centers, fostering uninhibited creativity. The band also shared their favorite local acts, including Swapmeet, Nika Mo, Perfect 50, Gilly & Bede, Resting Mind Flowers, Sevilles, Jamie Lena, Passion Pop Music, Ebop, and Daisypicker.
