Antwerp's Cultural Renaissance: From Rubens to Contemporary Art

cultural-heritage · 2026-05-04

Antwerp, recognized as Europe's diamond hub, seamlessly merges historic house museums with modern artistic expressions. The Rubenshuis is home to Flemish Baroque masterpieces, while the Plantin-Moretus Museum maintains the residence of publisher Christophe Plantin. After its renovation by Axel Vervoordt and Tatsuro Miki, the M HKA reopened in 2017, showcasing works from artists like James Lee Byars and Marlene Dumas. The Axel Vervoordt Gallery features creations by El Anatsui and Raimund Girke. An open-air sculpture park, the Middelheim Museum exhibits pieces from Erwin Wurm and Auguste Rodin. The MAS highlights the city's maritime connections. Zaha Hadid's Port House, opened in 2016, repurposed a former fire station. The KMSKA is currently undergoing a €44 million renovation, expected to finish in 2019/2020.
