Antwerp dedicates four exhibitions to James Ensor for 75th death anniversary

For the 75th anniversary of James Ensor's death (1860–1949), Antwerp is hosting four exhibitions across its museums. The KMSKA (Royal Museum of Fine Arts) presents 'In your wildest dreams,' one of the largest Ensor shows in Belgium in 25 years, featuring loans from around the world and juxtaposing his works with those of Courbet, Monet, Manet, and others. Curator Herwig Todts notes Ensor never developed a single style, changing every two years. The exhibition runs until January. At FOMU (Photo Museum), Cindy Sherman's 'Early Works 1975–1980' and 'Anti-Fashion' are on view until February, with the latter drawing parallels to Ensor's use of masks. MoMu (Fashion Museum) presents 'Masquerade, make-up & Ensor,' exploring ambiguity and distortion through fashion and art, featuring works by Inge Grognard, Martin Margiela, Balenciaga, Lucy Bridge, Eugene Souleiman, Julien D'Ys, Galliano, Comme Des Garçons, Issy Wood, and Genieve Figgis. The Plantin-Moretus Museum showcases 'Ensor's State of Imagination,' focusing on his graphic works, including etchings and prints, some exhibited for the first time. Ensor co-founded the avant-garde group Les XX.
