Antti Laitinen presents two new works for Finland's Venice Biennale pavilion

exhibition · 2026-04-20

Finnish artist Antti Laitinen will exhibit two new works at the Venice Biennale, representing Finland in the Giardini's Aalto Pavilion. His project Forest Square involves cutting down a 10m x 10m section of forest near his home, documenting the process through three photographs: the untouched forest, the cleared black square, and the sorted materials arranged by type. Tree Reconstruction consists of five large trees felled in Finland, chopped into parts and reassembled outside the pavilion like a jigsaw puzzle. Laitinen notes this commission provided more resources and time than usual, though he maintains his typical artistic ambition. When asked about representing his country, he stated he primarily represents himself, expressing gratitude that Finland chose to present his work. The artist aims for clarity in his concepts, making them accessible to diverse audiences without targeting specific groups. This marks his first participation in the biennale, and he looks forward to seeing sunlight after months working in a dark, cold hall. ArtReview published this questionnaire in May as part of a series featuring artists from national pavilions ahead of the biennale's opening.
