Antony Gormley's first VR work Lunatick launches at The Store X London
British sculptor Antony Gormley (b. 1950, London) has created his first virtual reality project, titled Lunatick, commissioned by Acute Art, a UK startup specializing in extended reality art. Directed by Swedish curator Daniel Birnbaum since late 2018, Acute Art previously collaborated with Jeff Koons, Olafur Eliasson, Marina Abramović, and Anish Kapoor. For Lunatick, Gormley worked with Indian-American astrophysicist Priya Natarajan, using data and images from NASA. The VR experience replicates the Apollo 11 mission, which landed on the Moon on July 20, 1969. Viewers wear a headset to travel from Earth through the atmosphere to the lunar surface, exploring craters in detail. Gormley was inspired by childhood readings of C.S. Lewis's science fiction. The work will be shown at The Store X, 180 The Strand, London, from April 5 to 25, with tickets at £5.
