Antonio Trotta (1937–2019), Italian-Argentine sculptor, dies at 82
Antonio Trotta, an Italian artist born in Stio in 1937, died on August 26, 2019. He spent part of his life in Argentina, where his career began at the Museo de Arte Moderno and the Instituto Torcuato di Tella in Buenos Aires. In 1968, he represented Argentina at the Venice Biennale in its national pavilion. Trotta founded the Gruppo SI and collaborated with Nizzoli Associati from 1969 to 1973 on architecture and urban planning projects in Italy and Seville. His work, described by critic Lorenzo Madaro as a sculpture of duality between form and space, lightness and classicism, also engaged with photography, embroidery, and performance. He exhibited at galleries including Christian Stein (Turin), Marilena Bonomo (Bari), Cesare Manzo (Pescara), and Cardi (Milan). He participated in the Venice Biennale three more times (1976, 1978, 1990). In 2007, the Museo Archivio Antonio Trotta opened in Stio. He became a member of the Accademia Nazionale di San Luca in 2009. A recent exhibition at Like a little disaster in Polignano a Mare featured his 1966 work 'Paquete especial', first shown in Buenos Aires in 1967.
