Antonio Saura's Writings and Art Compiled in New Publication

publication · 2026-04-23

The Fondation Archives Antonio Saura in Geneva has released 'Antonio Saura par lui-même', a comprehensive volume compiling 91 texts written by the Spanish painter, illustrator, and printmaker Antonio Saura about his own work. The book, translated by Edmond Raillard, includes reproductions of 371 works. Olivier Weber-Caflish served as preface writer and concept designer, assisted by Marina Saura and a team. Saura began writing in 1947, the same year he started painting, and maintained a parallel practice of writing and painting throughout his career. The publication is described as a 'partial autobiography in search of an intimate correspondence between life and art'. The volume showcases Saura's working method through the selection of iconographic documents and layout, exemplified by a page featuring a Crucifixion painting alongside related images. The book demonstrates that Saura was among the great painters who were also acute commentators on their own work.
