Antonio Rovaldi transforms Milan garage into artist-run space CLER

artist · 2026-05-04

Artist Antonio Rovaldi (Parma, 1975) has converted a former mechanical workshop and construction company depot in Milan's Via Padova into CLER, an artist-run space and studio. The name, meaning 'shutter' in Milanese dialect, was designed by graphic Alessandro Costariol. Rovaldi acquired the space at auction two years ago and renovated it with architecture firm DWA and his brother. CLER hosts temporary exhibitions by artists of Rovaldi's generation, showing unpublished works. The third show features Luigi Fiano's photographic series 'A River' on the Po River embankments, alongside a film by Rovaldi and Ettore Favini titled 'To Say Nothing Of The Dog', started in 2014 for the 48th Premio Suzzara. Future exhibitions include Paola De Pietri (late September) and Italo Zuffi (late October), with plans to invite international artists such as Anton Ginzburg (New York), Michael Hoepfner (Vienna), Charlotte Dumas (Denmark), Javier Arce (Spain), Pierre Decamps (France), and Maurice van Es (Netherlands). Rovaldi also works on a long-term project 'End. The Silence Of New York City Frontiers', a photographic walk around the five boroughs' edges, involving writers and sound mapping with Massimo Carozzi (ZimmerFrei).
