Antonio Pappano to Conclude 17-Year Tenure at Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia

Antonio Pappano, Music Director of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia for 17 years, will step down in autumn 2023 to become Chief Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra. He will remain as Emeritus Director, a new role for the 500-year-old institution. Pappano will conduct Strauss's Elektra on October 18, 2022, opening the 2022-2023 symphony season. Born in London in 1959 to Italian parents, he studied piano and later conducting in the US. His career includes posts at Norske Opera (1990), Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie (1991-2002), and Covent Garden (2002). Under his leadership, Santa Cecilia returned to Carnegie Hall in 2017 and toured globally. He was knighted in 2012, received Italy's Cavaliere di Gran Croce, and won a Grammy in 2016. Rome Mayor Gualtieri thanked him for his contributions. The institution launched Formula Y, a subscription for under-35s at €280 for 28 concerts.
