Antonio López's Bronze Portals for Burgos Cathedral Spark Controversy

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-26

The Metropolitan Chapter of Burgos Cathedral in Spain has commissioned artist Antonio López to create three bronze portals for the Gothic cathedral's main facade, a project initiated in 2021. The portals, costing approximately €1.2 million, are intended to replace existing 1790 elm wood doors. The project has faced criticism from local and national public opinion, as well as a negative non-binding opinion from ICOMOS and rejection from the Junta de Castilla y León's heritage department. Critics include citizen groups who fear the contemporary work will clash with the cathedral's Gothic aesthetic. López, a celebrated Spanish realist artist now in his late eighties, recently unveiled a statue of Goya in Fuendetodos. His portals depict three Christian themes: the Annunciation (left), Creation (center), and Incarnation (right), using simple, everyday imagery. After nearly six years of work combining 3D technology with traditional lost-wax casting, the six-meter-tall, two-ton doors arrived in Burgos and have been on display in the cathedral museum since late November, attracting over 15,000 visitors. Canon Don Carlos Izquierdo, the chapter's culture spokesperson, stated that the portals represent how the current era interacts with the cathedral, respecting its historical essence. The cathedral has launched a dedicated website to explain the project. The controversy highlights tensions between contemporary art and heritage preservation.
