Antonio Ligabue's Studio: The Painter Who Spoke with Animals

artist · 2026-04-26

The article explores the life and work of Antonio Ligabue (Zurich, 1899 – Gualtieri, 1965), an outsider artist who found solace in nature and animals. Expelled from Switzerland in 1919, he settled in Gualtieri, Italy, where he was known as 'Toni al mat' due to his mental health issues. Ligabue's art, primarily depicting animals, served as therapy. He initially slept in a local hospice and worked as a laborer on the Po river embankment, where he began sculpting with river clay. He later lived in the barn of Celso Caleffi and his cousin Berto, sleeping standing up due to a goiter. Ligabue painted outdoors until meeting artist Renato Marino Mazzacurati in winter 1928-29, who provided him with a studio. He later worked at Sergio Negri's gallery in Guastalla and in Reggio Emilia, in a house provided by motorcycle champion Bruno Bertacchini. His fame exploded with a solo show at Galleria La Barcaccia in Rome in 1961. Today, the Caleffi family home has become the Casa Museo Antonio Ligabue, displaying original posters of two films about him (1977 with Flavio Bucci, 2020 with Elio Germano), family paintings, and personal objects. The museum was inspired by a drawing Ligabue made for Giuseppe Caleffi when he was in second grade.
