Antonio Ligabue Retrospective Opens in Turin with Over 90 Works

exhibition · 2026-04-27

A major exhibition dedicated to Antonio Ligabue opens at the Promotrice di Belle Arti in Turin on January 26, running until May 26. Curated by Giovanni Faccenda, the show presents over 90 works—71 paintings, 8 sculptures, and 13 drawings—spanning the artist's life and tormented psyche. It is the first exhibition organized with the Fondazione Augusto Agosta Tota, nearly a year after the death of Augusto Agosta Tota, who was Ligabue's friend, promoter, and scholar. Works come from private collections and include iconic pieces such as self-portraits, Testa di tigre (1953), Leopardo (1955), Motociclista (1954), and Traversata della Siberia (1959). The curator emphasizes that for Ligabue, art was not therapy but a raw narrative of his existential torments through allegories featuring animals like tigers, vipers, dogs, flies, and bees.
