Antonio Dalla Valle, major Italian outsider artist, dies at 81
Antonio Dalla Valle, one of Italy's most significant outsider artists, died on March 27, 2020, at the age of 81. Born in 1939 in Cles, Trentino, he spent much of his life in psychiatric institutions, beginning with his first hospitalization at the asylum of Pergine. His creative output, long misunderstood, was finally nurtured after 1997 when he was welcomed by the Fondazione Sospiro in Villa Cattaneo, near Cremona, and joined La Manica Lunga – Officina Creativa, an atelier led by artist Paola Pontiggia. Dalla Valle's works—graphic, sculptural, and painterly—were characterized by obsessive writing, sealed notebooks, and assemblages of found objects, often wrapped in transparent tape. Art historian and critic Bianca Tosatti, a longtime advocate, compared him to Marcel Duchamp and Antonin Artaud, noting his conceptual rigor rooted in bodily experience. His works entered prestigious collections including the Musée de l'Art Brut in Lausanne, the Menozzi collection in Reggio Emilia, the Mad Musée in Liège, and the Art Collection & Marge in Brussels. Major exhibitions were held in Cremona, Brussels, Paris, Liège, Genoa, and San Marino. Tosatti described his practice as a form of poetic insurrection, where language and matter merge into silent, unclassifiable objects.
