Antonio Biasiucci's Photographic Installation Enters Certosa di Capri

exhibition · 2026-04-26

Antonio Biasiucci, born in Caserta in 1961, is an artist-researcher who treats photography as conceptual practice. His new exhibition at the Certosa di San Giacomo on Capri overturns the stereotypical sun-drenched imagery of the island associated with Luigi Ghirri and Mimmo Jodice, instead presenting an unsettling, black-and-white portrait. Biasiucci adopts a theatrical approach derived from experimental director Antonio Neiwiller, constructing projects like screenplays. His series "Insula" consists of seven episodes inspired by Riccardo Esposito's book "Capri, luce e ombra. Guida a misteri e segreti dell'isola," focusing on metamorphosis and the esoteric side of Capri. Curated by Gianluca Riccio with scholar Giulia Imparato, the project won the Ministero della Cultura's StrategiaFotografia2024 call, leading to a residency with Associazione del Rosario Arte e Cultura Contemporanea. Riccio notes Capri's history of utopias, referencing painter Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach. In the Certosa's church, Biasiucci breaks conventions with a horizontal installation where 63 photographs are set into structures resembling ancient altars. Francesco Sirano, director of the Parco Archeologico di Capri, announced that the works will enter the Certosa's permanent collection.
