Anton Newcombe interview: art, music, and The Brian Jonestown Massacre
Anton Newcombe, founder of The Brian Jonestown Massacre (BJM), discusses his definitions of art and music in an interview with Samantha Stella. Newcombe, born in Newport Beach in 1967, formed BJM in San Francisco in 1990. The band's name combines Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones and the Jonestown massacre. BJM appears in the documentary 'Dig!' (2004 Sundance Grand Jury Prize, MoMA permanent collection) by Ondi Timoner. Newcombe now lives in Berlin with his own studio. He has released albums with Tess Parks and produced for L'Épée (with Emmanuelle Seigner and The Limiñanas). Current BJM lineup includes guitarist Hákon Aðalsteinsson. Newcombe is working on 60 new BJM songs, a project with Dot Allison, and hopes for a new L'Épée album.
