Antoine Guilloppé's 'Lupo nero' Silent Book Published in Italian

publication · 2026-04-27

French illustrator Antoine Guilloppé's wordless picture book 'Lupo nero' (originally 'Loup noir', published by Casterman in 2004) has been released in Italy by Camelozampa. The 32-page silent book uses pure black-and-white silhouette illustrations to tell the story of a boy walking through a snowy forest at night, watched by a wolf. Guilloppé, born in Chambéry and a graduate of the École Émile Cohl in Lyon, employs a stark, high-contrast technique with no halftones, creating suspense through sequential wide shots. The book has been used in multidisciplinary educational programs worldwide. Camelozampa, a growing Veneto-based publisher, brought the volume to Italy in 2021 (ISBN 9791280014122, €16). The review by Ferruccio Giromini highlights the book's minimalist aesthetic and its roots in shadow theater, Victorian silhouettes, and the animations of Lotte Reiniger and Michel Ocelot.
