Antoine Dorotte's Hybrid Art: Engraving, Drawing, and Sculpture

Antoine Dorotte, a French artist trained at the École supérieure d'art de Quimper, combines engraving, drawing, and sculpture in his practice. He uses zinc plates as a versatile material, allowing for accumulation, arrangement, and modification. His works reference comic books, B-movies, video games, and art history, blending high and low culture. Notable pieces include 'Darkarakiri' (2010), featuring Darth Vader pierced by a red neon; 'Amalgama' (2010), polyhedra referencing Albrecht Dürer and Donald Judd; 'Suite d'O' (2010), elbows for rainwater drainage covered in scales evoking the Ouroboros; 'Blow' (2010), walls covered in aquatints suggesting an explosion; and 'Aka Black Mamba' (2012), a troubling mental atmosphere. 'Dirty Bobineau' (2011) is a zinc coil unspooling in space, engraved with a panoramic landscape using acid applied with a garden sprayer. 'Una misteriosa bola' (2011), shown at the Biennale d'Anglet, is a five-meter sphere covered in aquatinted zinc scales, partially submerged in saltwater, built on Buckminster Fuller's geodesic dome principle. 'Sur un coup d'surin' (2007) reenacts the knife fight from 'West Side Story' across dozens of zinc plates arranged in a serpentine path. Films 'Move it Piano' (2009) and 'Whirlwind Riding' (2012) animate engraved images. 'Bloom from Shop of Horrors' (2012) is a black bulb releasing copper sulfate solution that progressively ornaments its surface.
