Antigone Reimagined: Creonte Takes Center Stage in New Production by Anconetani

A new production of Antigone, directed by Andrea Anconetani and written by Alessandro Pertosa, premiered in August 2023 at the ancient Roman theater of Falerone in Fermo, Italy. The play reinterprets Sophocles' classic by shifting focus from Antigone to Creonte, exploring his guilt and the conflict between law and conscience. Anconetani explains that the production begins where Sophocles' ends, keeping only Creonte alive to confront his actions. The project is a collaboration with Nuovi Linguaggi of Ancona and Culturarte 41010 of Seville, and features two casts: an Italian cast with Melania Fiore as Antigone and Giorgio Sebastianelli as Creonte, and a Spanish cast with Susam Galiano Perez as Antigone and Luis Rodriguez Luna as Creonte. The Spanish debut is scheduled for November 2023 in Seville. The production stems from a 2020-22 Erasmus project in Spain focused on using theater for history teaching. The ancient theater of Falerone, with its first and second orders of seating from Roman times, provides a timeless setting. The play questions whether law and the heart can coexist, asserting that life remains unresolved.
