Antidote 02: Art as Antidote to Commerce at Galeries Lafayette
The second edition of Antidote, curated by Guillaume Houzé, took place from October 27 to December 9, 2006, at Galeries Lafayette Haussmann in Paris. The initiative, launched in 2005, supports young French galleries by purchasing works and displaying them in the Galerie des galeries, a dedicated space created in 2001. Houzé, a descendant of founder Théophile Bader, aims to give artists unusual visibility and introduce department store customers to contemporary art outside traditional venues. The 2006 edition added a partnership with FIAC and production assistance. Seven artists were selected: Saâdane Afif, Pierre Ardouvin, Michel Blazy, Laurent Grasso, Mathieu Mercier, Xavier Veilhan, and newcomer Audrey Nervi (born 1974), whose hyperrealist painting recalls Elizabeth Peyton. The exhibition deliberately avoids a single trend, embracing eclecticism. Critic Paul Ardenne highlights the organic integration of museum-quality art within a consumer temple, provoking reflection on the tension between high culture and commodity. He notes that while such commercial-art collaborations are not new (citing Hermès windows and Vanessa Beecroft at Vuitton), Antidote 02 ultimately asserts art's superiority as an antidote to vulgar merchandise.
