Antibes Postcard Museum: A Journey Through Space and Time

In Antibes, France, the Musée de la Carte Postale offers a unique journey through the history and cultural significance of postcards. Founded in 2000 by passionate collector Christian Deflandre, the museum is entirely dedicated to this everyday object that has evolved from a simple means of correspondence to a medium for art, advertising, and propaganda. The museum houses nearly 3,000 postcards and documents, with a particular focus on the 'golden age' of postcards between 1900 and 1914, when millions of examples circulated worldwide. Visitors can explore the multiple uses of postcards, from tourist souvenirs to artistic expressions by the Surrealists, and even see unusual items like cards made from human hair or multifunctional models that serve as calendars, fans, or radios. This summer, the museum also presents an exhibition on spiders, exploring their transformation from good luck charms during the Belle Époque to symbols of fear in World War I propaganda. Additionally, the museum in Baud, Brittany, offers the exhibition 'Le tour du monde en 80 cartes postales,' following the imaginary itinerary of fictional explorer Rozenn Le Louarn. The postcard's history dates back to 1869 in Vienna, with its introduction to France in 1873. The museum is run entirely by volunteers and is part of a series by Beaux Arts highlighting France's most unusual museums.
