Anti-Exhibition in a Deconsecrated Church in Naples

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Curated by Federico del Vecchio, 'An Apartment Named Desire' takes place in a deconsecrated chapel in Naples' historic center, now the home of Flip, an itinerant artist platform active for over a decade. The exhibition features works by students of Frances Scholz from HBK Braunschweig (University of Fine Arts of Braunschweig, Germany), alongside a performance by Scholz and a reading by Mark von Schlegell. The show explores the concept of 'anti-exhibition'—works created during a residency in Naples but deliberately hidden in the artists' private apartments, revealed only through cryptic clues in the press release and invitation. This process of concealment and disclosure mirrors Fred Forest's 1987 Documenta piece, where he hid an ultrasonic golden rectangle and revealed its existence the next day in newspapers. The displayed works—ranging from material interventions into the chapel's aged walls to pictorial and drawing-based pieces, as well as found-object fetishes—engage directly with the site's history and atmosphere. The exhibition runs in 2022.
