Anthropic Launches Legal AI Tools Amid Surging Competition

Anthropic announced Tuesday a suite of new chatbot features for law firms, expanding its Claude for Legal platform with specialized plugins and MCP connectors. The tools automate document search, case law review, deposition prep, and drafting across commercial, privacy, corporate, employment, product, and AI governance fields. MCP connectors integrate Claude with existing legal software like DocuSign, Box, and Thomson Reuters (Westlaw). The features are available to all paying Claude customers, building on earlier legal plugins launched in February. The move comes as the legal AI sector heats up: in March, Harvey raised $200 million at an $11 billion valuation; last month, Legora secured a $600 million Series D and launched an ad campaign with Jude Law. A company spokesperson said the legal sector is under mounting pressure to adopt AI, and Claude is deepening its push into knowledge work. Meanwhile, AI-related legal failures persist: dozens of lawyers have used AI to generate error-ridden documents, California fined an attorney for using ChatGPT to draft a fake-quote-laden appeal, federal judges have been caught using AI for rulings, and AI-generated lawsuits are overwhelming courts.
