Anthony McCall's Solid Light Works at Pioneer Works, New York

exhibition · 2026-05-05

Pioneer Works in Red Hook, Brooklyn, presents Anthony McCall's first New York solo exhibition, 'Solid Light Works,' running until March 11, 2018. This is the first time his vertical installations are shown alongside horizontal variants. McCall's epic light installations fill the dark, haze-filled main hall, giving light a material consistency. A key figure of Expanded Cinema, McCall began his 'solid light' series in 1973 with the 16mm film 'Line Describing a Cone,' where a projected light beam slowly evolves into a three-dimensional volumetric form. He considers these works as occupying a space between sculpture, cinema, and drawing: sculpture because viewers must move through the projected volumes; cinema because the large objects change over time; and drawing because each installation originates from a two-dimensional sketch. McCall, born in Ravensbourne in 1946, was a protagonist of the conceptual art scene in the 1970s and began using new technologies in the early 2000s, which have shaped his artistic output ever since.
