Anselm Kiefer's Monumental 'Danaë' Debuts in Europe at Valencia's CAHH

exhibition · 2026-03-25

Anselm Kiefer's first exhibition in Valencia opens at the CAHH – Centro de Arte Hortensia Herrero, featuring the European debut of 'Danaë', a monumental painting over 13 meters wide previously shown only in New York in 2022. The work depicts the interior of Berlin's Tempelhof airport, an emblematic Nazi-era building, overlaid with a golden cascade referencing the Greek myth of Danaë. Curated by Javier Molins, the show spans six galleries in the Palacio de Valeriola, a Baroque palace in Valencia's historic center that has housed CAHH since 2023. Running from April 29 to October 25, the exhibition highlights the decade-long relationship between Kiefer and collector Hortensia Herrero, who began acquiring his work with 'Böse Blumen' from the 2016 Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. Her collection also includes David Hockney, Anish Kapoor, Georg Baselitz, Olafur Eliasson, and Cristina Iglesias. Kiefer's presence in Spain is further consolidated by his pavilion at the Fundació Sorigué in Lleida, a commission for the Guggenheim Bilbao, and the upcoming 'Opus Magnum' show at La Pedrera – Casa Milà in Barcelona starting October 2026.
