Anselm Kiefer's First Valencia Exhibition Opens at Centro Hortensia Herrero

The Centro de Arte Hortensia Herrero in Valencia opens its first exhibition dedicated to Anselm Kiefer, curated by Javier Molins in close collaboration with the artist. The show spans six galleries with monumental, immersive works that explore history, landscape, and mythology. It originated from Hortensia Herrero's acquisition of 'Böse Blumen' a decade ago, inspired by Baudelaire. The exhibition includes pieces from Herrero's collection such as 'Walhalla' and 'Der Tod und das Mädchen', as well as works leaving Kiefer's studio for the first time: 'Elektra', 'Dryad', 'Für Walther von d. Vogelweide', and 'Wer jetzt keines Haus hat, baut sich keines mehr'. 'Danaë', never before exhibited in Europe, reproduces the interior of Berlin's Tempelhof airport and alludes to the myth of Danaë. Other works include 'Johannis Nacht', 'Himmel–Erde' (1974), and pieces inspired by Schubert, Wagner, and Rilke. Kiefer, born in March 1945, is a key figure in the revival of German painting in the 1970s alongside Georg Baselitz, Gerhard Richter, Sigmar Polke, and Jörg Immendorff. His work consistently engages with German history, myth, nature, and literature, particularly the medieval poet Walther von der Vogelweide. The exhibition runs from April 29 to October 25, 2026.
