Anri Sala's Temporal and Sonic Layering at Galerie Chantal Crousel

exhibition · 2026-04-23

Anri Sala's 2008 exhibition at Galerie Chantal Crousel in Paris (March 15–April 10) explored memory, sound, and space through interconnected video and sculptural works. The show featured three key pieces: "Air Cushioned Ride" (2006), a video capturing radio interference near trucks in the Arizona desert; "A Spurious Emission" (2007), a studio performance by a baroque trio and country singers translating that experience; and "After Three Minutes" (2007), a silent double projection of a cymbal vibrating under strobe light, referencing Paul Sharits' flicker films. The exhibition also included "Title Suspended" (2008), rotating violet-gloved hands missing fingers, and a reinterpretation of "Long Sorrow" (2005) on vinyl. Sala described place as a blend of space and time, avoiding illustration in favor of transformation. The works shifted from spatial governance (truck arrangement causing interference) to temporal governance (musical score). Mark Godfrey noted Sala treats light as "a force of opacity and aggression." The exhibition's semi-darkness echoed Sala's 2004 Arc show.
