Anouk Chambaz: Feminist Laughter and Cinematic Materiality
Swiss artist Anouk Chambaz (b. 1993, Lausanne) creates hypnotic video works that emphasize the materiality of film and its devices. Her practice, rooted in cinema studies and philosophy, explores alterity through women, children, peripheries, and nature. Chambaz's latest work, 'Mon rire est cascade', features seven women embodying key feminist figures like Angela Davis and Carla Lonzi, laughing. The piece was created for the Biennale di Gubbio (opening October 15), curated by Ludovico Pratesi and Marco Bassan, and responds to the male-dominated portraits in Palazzo Ducale's apartments. The video includes activists from the Roman association Donne X Strada. Chambaz's earlier project 'Danisinni!', a collaboration with Filippo Foscarini, documents the Palermo neighborhood of Danisinni through circular tracking shots, likened to Cézanne's paintings of Mont Sainte-Victoire. She was a finalist for ArteVisione LAB (Careof, Milan) and winner of the video section of the Combat Prize in 2022. Chambaz lives between Rome and Venice, and credits Castro Projects (Rome) and Gaia Di Lorenzo for fostering her career. Upcoming exhibitions include Mind the Gap (curated by Lorenzo Lazzari and Giada Centazzo, Udine), Biennale Minus20degree (early 2024), and her first gallery show at Eugenia Delfini in Rome.
