Anonym Studio Wraps Thai Family Home Around Twin Banyan Trees

architecture-design · 2026-05-12

Anonym Studio has completed Saikhoo House, a multigenerational residence in Samut Prakarn, Thailand, organized around two existing banyan trees on a 1.38-acre property. Architects Phongphat Ueasangkhomset and Parnduangjai Roojnawate preserved the site's wetlands and vegetation, integrating an L-shaped wooden deck around the trees. The design prioritizes natural ventilation, deep roof overhangs, and semi-outdoor spaces over air-conditioned interiors. The compound includes a separate house for the owners' parents, arranged around a courtyard. A 25-meter swimming pool runs parallel to a wing housing an office, workshop, and diving instruction area. The main communal spaces sit under a double-height ceiling. Courtyards function as passive cooling zones, with one featuring a single olive tree on white gravel. A glasshouse-like living space uses a transparent ceiling with an additional roof layer. Visual artist Pomme Chan contributed a painted wall. Materially, the project emphasizes wood, concrete, and rammed earth. The grandparents' residence encloses an edible garden. Bedrooms are intentionally restrained in scale. The overall intervention treats the banyan trees, courtyards, and terraces as primary architectural elements.
