Anohni performs at Flowers Festival in Collegno, Italy
Anohni, formerly known as Antony Hegarty, performed her only Italian date at the Flowers Festival in Collegno in 2016, presenting songs from her recent album 'Hopelessness'. Dressed in black with a hood and veil, she evoked a mystic or nun-like figure, moving like a jellyfish. The album, produced by Oneohtrix Point Never and Hudson Mohawke, blends techno, pop, protest song, and clubbing culture, with lyrics addressing guilt, the biosphere, Palestine, the Iraq war, and even Obama. Anohni, who changed her name and sex, had received an Academy Award nomination for 'Manta Rey' but boycotted the ceremony after not being invited to perform. On stage, she used video art featuring twenty women and transgender individuals, including Naomi Campbell and Shirin Neshat. Campbell opened with fifteen minutes of still dance, while Neshat appeared in a series of close-ups projected on screen. Anohni lent her voice to them in a reversed playback, while they lent their faces, creating a synergy that emphasized image over body. The performance aimed to communicate beyond music, using dramatic and theatrical imagery. Anohni described the album as a 'Trojan horse' to bring strong messages to electronic music listeners. The concert was documented by photographer Martina Caruso.
