Anni Luce 2019: Emerging Italian Theatre at Romaeuropa Festival

The Romaeuropa Festival's Anni Luce program, curated by Maura Teofili of Carrozzerie | n.o.t., returned for its third edition in 2019 under the theme 'Presente/Pretese/Generazioni'. The showcase featured four Italian theatre companies—Liv Ferracchiati, Industria Indipendente, Dante Antonelli, and La Ballata dei Lenna—with the latter being the only new addition. The performances explored identity, generational pressures, and dystopian futures. Industria Indipendente's 'aerobica tragedia' envisioned a 2059 utopia turned oppressive, critiquing collective vs. individual desires. Liv Ferracchiati's 'Commedia con schianto' satirized the Italian theatre system's obsession with under-35 artists. Dante Antonelli's 'Atto di adorazione' drew on Yukio Mishima to depict adolescent struggles against constraints. La Ballata dei Lenna's 'Libya. Back Home' addressed Italian colonialism in Libya and contemporary violence, using personal narrative to confront political apathy. The program's decision to re-invite three previous artists sparked reflection on the state of emerging Italian theatre.
