Anni Albers Retrospective at Tate Modern for Bauhaus Centenary

exhibition · 2026-05-04

Tate Modern in London will host the first major British retrospective of textile artist Anni Albers (1899-1994) from October 11, 2018 to January 27, 2019, ahead of the 2019 Bauhaus centenary. Born Annelise Else Frieda Fleischmann in Berlin, she arrived at the Bauhaus as a student in 1922, where she met her future husband Joseph Albers as well as key modernists like Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee. Despite the school's aspiration to gender equality, women were discouraged from studying certain subjects including painting. Albers reluctantly began weaving, but found her privileged expressive medium in the school's vibrant textile workshop, dedicating most of her career to weaving. The exhibition explores how she reinvented traditional handweaving in a modern key, bringing together major works from European and American collections, many shown for the first time in the UK.
