Annette Messager, Yang Fudong, and Gerhard Richter in New York, October 2006

In October 2006, a promenade through New York art venues featured key exhibitions. At Marian Goodman Gallery, Annette Messager's installation "Gonflés, dégonflés" presented pastel, parachute-cloth organs that inflated and deflated on the floor. Opposite, Yang Fudong's eight-screen film "No Snow on the Broken Bridge" depicted two quartets of men and women at West Lake in Hangzhou, China, exploring tradition versus modernity. At MoMA, the exhibition "Out of Time" mixed mediums and generations, including Gerhard Richter's painting series "October 18, 1977" and Robert Gober's "Prison Window." Rineke Dijkstra's "Almerisa" series documented a Bosnian refugee child in Amsterdam over eleven years. Bill Viola's "Stations" and Pipilotti Rist's "Over Is Over All" used slow motion and loops to suspend time. At Rockefeller Center, Anish Kapoor's "Sky Mirror" reflected the cobalt sky.
