Anne Tyng's Geometric Legacy and Contemporary Architectural Resonances
Anne Tyng (1920–2011), a trailblazing architect, made significant contributions to habitable space-frame designs and left a lasting mark on 20th-century architecture through her exploration of geometric forms. She worked alongside Louis Kahn on the Yale University Art Gallery (1953) and the unrealized City Tower (1952–7). Her notable projects, such as the Urban Hierarchy (1969–71), were showcased in the 2011 exhibition 'Anne Tyng: Inhabiting Geometry.' Her partnership with Kahn, examined in Nathaniel Kahn's documentary My Architect (2003), inspired her theories on 'dynamic symmetry.' Buckminster Fuller admired her foresight regarding computer-generated architecture, which she began exploring after taking programming classes in 1967. Tyng's impact is evident in Petrit Halilaj's installation at the Venice Biennale and the 1982 National Library in Pristina, designed by Andrija Mutnjaković. This article appeared in October 2013.
