Anne Tallentire on Peripatetic Practice and Political Art
Anne Tallentire, born in Co. Armagh and based in London since 1984, is a professor at Central Saint Martins and convenor of the research project Double agents. Her practice spans installation, performance, and moving image, focusing on how institutional, political, and social systems produce a peripatetic approach. She often works on the street, filming workers or collecting materials, and collaborates with John Seth under work-seth/tallentire. In a conversation with curator Lisa Panting, Tallentire discusses her solo show 'This and Other Things 1999–2010' at IMMA in 2010, including the interactive video projection 'Nowhere Else' (2010), which overlays a London map with constellations. She cites influences from Michel de Certeau, Hannah Arendt, Jacques Rancière, Giorgio Agamben, Antonio Negri, and Michel Foucault. Her collaborative works like 'Trailer', 'Manifesto', and 'Dispersal' engage found objects and address cultural difference and borders. Recent series 'Field Study 1' (2010) lists flower names in search of an 'alien' plant. Tallentire expresses wariness of photography and notes a shift in younger artists' political engagement, emphasizing the need for accessible art education.
