Anne-Solange Muis publishes novel 'Écume d'hiver' set in Saint-Pierre et Miquelon
Anne-Solange Muis has released her new novel 'Écume d'hiver' through publisher Phébus. The book transports readers to the remote French archipelago of Saint-Pierre et Miquelon, located over 4,000 kilometers from mainland France in North America south of Newfoundland. This overseas territory spans 242 square kilometers with approximately 6,000 inhabitants. Muis, a geographer who founded the publishing house Terre Urbaine, crafts a narrative centered on two brothers, Michel and Jean, who maintain traditional cod fishing livelihoods in the village of Miquelon. Jean's mysterious disappearance during extreme cold weather forces his son Yoann to return to the island he left as a child. Through chapters structured like paintings, the author immerses readers in the landscapes and legends of Miquelon-Langlade. The novel explores themes of transmission and reconnection with ancestral land. Muis will participate in the 'Livre Paris' festival from April 17 to 19, 2026. Her work has been recognized as a finalist for the Prix Ouest France Étonnants voyageurs 2026 and selected for the Prix Gens de Mer 2026. Her previous novel, 'Une île pour elle,' received multiple awards including the Prix Amerigo-Vespucci. The book presentation describes Muis's prose as possessing infinite sobriety while constructing immense settings for vibrant stories.
