Anne Sherwood Pundyk's 'The Revolution Will Be Painted' Explores Feminist Performance and Return to Canvas

artist · 2026-04-22

In her studio located in Mattituck, New York, artist Anne Sherwood Pundyk produced a large unstretched canvas measuring 15 feet by 11 feet, named 'The Revolution Will Be Painted.' This artwork was born from a drop cloth utilized in her studios in Bushwick and TriBeCa between 2012 and 2014. Pundyk, who co-curated the 'Milk and Night' exhibition at Gallery Sensei in the spring of 2014, developed the piece during that time. It showcases indigo Rorschach forms, vibrant red areas, and a variety of chevrons, with the chevron design inspired by a protective spell for Girls Against God (GAG). The painting has been displayed in four venues and is featured on the cover of HYSTERIA magazine's fifth issue. Pundyk views painting as a revolutionary act, created during an emotional moment in August while reflecting on her father Dirck Brown's passing in 2002.
