Anne Lacaton & Jean-Philippe Vassal Win 2019 EUMies Award for Grand Parc Transformation

award · 2026-05-04

The Mies van der Rohe Award for Contemporary Architecture, part of the 2019 European Union Prize, recognized French architects Anne Lacaton, Jean-Philippe Vassal, Frédéric Druot, and Christophe Hutin for their innovative work on the Grand Parc social housing complex in Bordeaux. This project, commissioned by AQUITANIS, introduced modular winter gardens and balconies, emphasizing the importance of reuse rather than demolition. Dorte Mandrup, the jury chair, commended the project’s generosity. During the award ceremony, a tribute was made to the residents. An exhibition titled "What's Old, What's New" at Palau Victòria Eugènia in Barcelona showcases 40 nominated projects from a total of 383 submissions and will move to BOZAR Centre for Fine Arts Brussels in September. BAST studio received the 2019 Emerging Architecture award for a school refectory in Montbrun-Bocage, France.
