Anne-Clémence de Grolée's Two-Venue Retrospective in Sicily

exhibition · 2026-05-05

Anne-Clémence de Grolée (Paris, 1963), a French artist who moved to Sicily, is the subject of a two-part retrospective titled "Une île à soi." The first part is at MuRa – Museo d’Arte Contemporanea di Racalmuto, the second at GAM – Galleria d’Arte Moderna di Palermo. Curated by Giulia Ingarao and organized by ruber.contemporanea in collaboration with the Institut français di Palermo, the exhibition takes a diachronic approach, featuring graphic works, installations, and photographs that highlight Sicily as a key inspiration. De Grolée's creative coordinates include archaic myth, the documentary repertoire of anthropologist Pitrè, the Mediterranean, and the (non-)culture of landscape and its abuses. Her first stay in Sicily was in 1996 at Fiumara d’Arte, where she explored archetypal links between earth and the female body. Her series "Ante/nate" features large linen and hemp garments suspended in space, referencing the myth of Persephone and Demeter. "Mobile City" is a toy-like model critiquing construction speculation, made of wooden elements, Lego bricks, satellite dishes, PVC tanks, and interrupted roads. In the "Esodo" section, a fleet of toy boats made from driftwood evokes migrant crossings in the Sicilian Channel. The exhibition runs until an unspecified date.
