Annamarie Dzendrowskyj: Atmosphere as a Language of Change

Annamarie Dzendrowskyj, an artist with a unique background in classical ballet, philosophy, and scuba diving, has developed a practice that merges painting, photography, and lived experience. Her work, exhibited extensively in Australia, the UK, Europe, and internationally, explores the subtle territory between recognition and uncertainty, often evoking atmospheres rather than literal landscapes. Influenced by J.M.W. Turner, Clarice Beckett, James McNeill Whistler, and contemporary artist Khibong Rhee, she creates monochromatic works using transparent oil glazes that gradually reveal forms. Her process involves extensive photographic documentation and experimentation with prints on canvas and tracing paper. Environmental awareness is central, inspired by Junichiro Tanizaki's 'In Praise of Shadows' and her visits to Australia's Blue Mountains World Heritage Area after the 2019-2020 bushfires and again in 2025. She aims to foster sensitivity toward nature and dialogue about climate change. Looking ahead, she hopes to dedicate more time to research and participate in an artist residency to study changing environments. Her work has been recognized through exhibitions, prizes, and public collections.
