Anna Shukeylo's Solo Exhibition 'Home' Opens at Museum of Russian Art in Jersey City

Anna Shukeylo's first solo exhibition, titled 'Home', opened at the Museum of Russian Art in Jersey City on November 22, 2014. The St Petersburg-born, New York-raised artist presents work drawing motifs from domestic furnishings and wall treatments, seeking formal balance through overlays and disruptions. Her paintings, layered and flattened, reference visual resources like Bonnard, Vuillard, and Matisse, echoing Maurice Denis's formalist idea that a picture is essentially a flat surface with colors in order. The exhibition runs concurrently with a group show curated by Shukeylo, featuring four artists from India, Iran, and the U.S. exploring East-West issues. Shukeylo serves as assistant to the editor at artcritical. The show is on view through January 8, 2015, with initial hours on Fridays from 4-8 PM and weekends from 2-6 PM through December 7, then by appointment. Located at 80 Grand Street, the museum is accessible via PATH train to Exchange Place, one stop from World Trade Center. An opening reception was held on November 22 from 6-8 PM.
