Anna Perach: Wearable Sculptures and Slavic Folklore
Ukrainian artist Anna Perach (born 1985, based in London) creates wearable sculptures and hybrid anthropomorphic figures that inhabit her installation and performance projects. Her characters, such as Alkonost and Spidora, draw from Slavic folklore, myths, and fairy tales. Perach's works exist in dual phases: static/sculptural and active/performative. She explores the relationship between four bodies: her own, the wearable sculpture's form, the performer's body, and the viewer's. Performances, lasting 15-20 minutes, are developed with a team including choreographer Luigi Ambrosio and sound producer Jamie Hamilton, who creates sound from materials like metal and tufting. Perach discovered tufting during her MFA at Goldsmiths University, using it to address themes of domesticity, cultural heritage, and gender roles. Recent exhibitions include Eye of the Collector at Cooke Latham Gallery in London and a group show at Hales Gallery. She will participate in Artissima Art Fair with Galleria ADA in late 2022.
