Anna Maria Maiolino's 300-Work Anthology Opens at Instituto Tomie Ohtake

exhibition · 2026-04-23

A major exhibition of Anna Maria Maiolino's work, titled 'psssiiiuuu...', opened in May 2022 at Instituto Tomie Ohtake in São Paulo. Curated by Paulo Miyada, the show presents approximately 300 pieces spanning paintings, drawings, woodcuts, sculptures, photographs, films, videos, audio works, and installations from various periods of her career. The exhibition occupies three large upper-floor rooms, a space previously reserved only for solo shows by Yayoi Kusama and Louise Bourgeois. Organized not as a linear retrospective but as a spiral, it explores recurring themes through three nuclei: ANNA, Não Não Não, and Ações Matéricas. The ANNA section examines the convergence of life, biography, desire, and multiplicity in her work, mapping her physical and psychic displacements. Não Não Não addresses macropolitical issues like hunger, dictatorship, censorship, repression, and state violence, featuring works such as the installation 'O amor se faz revolucionário' and the remounting of 'Arroz e Feijão' (1979). Ações Matéricas focuses on her material practice with clay, paint, glass, and concrete, anchored in bodily scale. The exhibition, which runs until July 24, 2022, results from three years of intensive contact between Miyada and Maiolino and includes a comprehensive catalog essay by the curator alongside reproductions of all exhibited works and a selection of the artist's writings.
