Anna Magnani biopic graphic novel by Rachele Morris and Marcella Onzo

publication · 2026-05-05

Rachele Morris and Marcella Onzo, two young Neapolitan cartoonists, have published their debut graphic novel 'Anna Magnani' with BeccoGiallo. The book is an imaginary interview that traces the life of the iconic Italian actress, from her early variety shows to her Oscar-winning role in 'The Rose Tattoo' (1956), and includes key films like 'Rome, Open City' (1945) and 'Mamma Roma' (1962). It also covers her rivalry with Ingrid Bergman, her turbulent love affair with Roberto Rossellini, and the absence of her mother, replaced by her grandmother. The authors selected biographical events based on emotional resonance, focusing on Magnani's search for emotional balance, attachment to her grandmother, and intense dedication to her profession. The narrative is inspired by Davide Toffolo's approach in 'Pasolini'. The black-and-white illustrations are essential and delicate, emphasizing the contrast between Magnani's public persona as a volcanic, Mediterranean icon and her private, introspective side. The 160-page book costs €17 and was published in Padua in 2017.
