publication · 2026-05-04

German illustrator Anna Haifisch's graphic novel 'The Artist' has been published in Italy by Eris Edizioni, marking the first time her work is available in the country. The book collects her mini-stories originally created for Vice, following a bird-like protagonist who struggles with poverty, insecurity, and the superficiality of the contemporary art world. Haifisch, a graduate of illustration in Leipzig who also spent time in Chicago, published her first graphic novel 'Von Spatz' in 2015. 'The Artist' oscillates between humorous and tragic tones, depicting encounters with curators, gallerists, collectors, and fellow artists. The protagonist, who has wanted to be an artist since childhood, finds himself unable to stop creating despite attempts to lead a conventional life. The book includes references to famous artworks and film posters, with covers paying homage to pop culture imagery. Published in Turin in 2019, the 184-page volume costs €20.
