Anna Dezeuze on Thomas Hirschhorn's Deleuze Monument
Anna Dezeuze has authored a book on Thomas Hirschhorn's Deleuze Monument (2000), the second in his series of four Monuments. The work was created for 'La Beauté' in Avignon and consisted of a rock with a quotation, an altar, a monumental sculpture, and a library of books by and about Gilles Deleuze. Located in the Cité Champfleury outside Avignon's historical walls, it embodied Hirschhorn's aim to place his work 'in a difficult situation' between reality, politics, and aesthetics. Dezeuze examines the monument's relation to 'scatter art' and participatory art of the 1990s, drawing on Deleuze's ideas and Hannah Arendt's definitions of work, labour, and action. The book is part of Afterall's One Work series and is available via MIT Press.
